A party is less than the ideal place to practice EFT, but when an opportunity to help arose at one, I just couldn’t resist it.

“Jane” (not her real name) is a keen horsewoman; she owns several horses and rides every day. As we were chatting about this and that, she mentioned a back problem she’d had for several months that was affecting her riding. Of course I offered EFT, to which she agreed and we moved to a quiet corner for a bit of privacy.

We started with:

Even though I have this back pain…

but her intensity remained the same (10 on a scale of 0 to 10) after a round. Obviously, there was a bit more to this back pain than met the eye, so I asked her what had been happening in her life when her back pain had started.

Surprise! She had had a major fall during a horse jumping class.

Using the Tell the Story Technique we tapped on

Even though I felt nervous…
Even though I wasn’t sure I was up to this class…
Even though my horse was jumpy…

As the story unfolded, it became clear that, from Jane’s point of view, the whole class had a “thing” about one particular place in the practice field–close to some overhanging trees that cast shadows providing a contrast between the bright sunshine in the rest of the field and the darkness of that particular part of it, with a busy road on the other side of the fence there, where there had been several riding accidents during classes. I’m a great believer in sneaking up on these things.

We tapped on:

Even though that scary bit is coming up …
Even though the WHOLE CLASS is nervous about that part of the field…
Even though it’s so dark there…
Even though the road is so busy…

At this point, Jane’s level of intensity about the incident was down to a 5 on a scale of 0 to 10, so there was progress! She was also surprised that her back was “less achy,” maybe even down to a 3 or 4!

We tapped through the accident itself:

Even though the horse spooked…
Even though everything slowed down…
Even though I bounced off the fence on my way down…
Even though I hit the ground hard, and awkwardly…
Even though it really hurt, and still hurts…
Even though I couldn’t stop it . everything was in slow motion . but I still couldn’t make it stop…
Even though I was so embarrassed, I can forgive myself .

At this point, her level of intensity went up. It went back up to a 7. Aha! Another aspect showing up–I love that. I asked her to go back to the beginning of the story and tell me about it again. This time, some resentment about the teacher, who she hadn’t mentioned before, showed up.

We tapped on:

Even though she expected too much of the WHOLE CLASS…
Even though she was supposed to keep us all safe . it was her job . and she didn’t do it very well…
Even though she was in charge and was supposed to look out for me…
Even though I was relying on her to teach me the right way…
Even though she blamed me for the fall…
Even though she made it my fault…
Even though I understand she was scared too…

At this point, I could see her system stacking up a whole lot of other things about teachers, authority figures, responsibility of adults, so in my best fashion, I mentioned it to her and suggested that we needed to stay focused on this particular incident and not slide off on to all the others which could be dealt with at a later date.

She was aware of this too and agreed. Particularly since her backache was gone and when asked to picture the story as a movie and try to get upset about it, she couldn’t: “It’s just a field, with trees.” She was surprised that her intensity was 0 on backache and 0 on the accident.

But I still wasn’t satisfied. We were both still aware of all those other things stacking up in her system to be dealt with too. And a party is just not the place to go there.

We tapped on:

Even though I have some other issues to deal with, I allow myself to do so at my own pace.
Even though there’s so much of it … it’s so overwhelming, I don’t have to do it all now.
Even though I know I have a lot to deal with, I can choose when and if I go there.

The huge sigh and the change in color in her face were indicators that we were done, at least for the moment, so I gave her my card and suggested she call me for an appointment when she was ready.

Several months later, not only has she had no recurrence of the backache and has had not even the slightest anxiety about classes in that field, she told me the WHOLE CLASS is much more relaxed about it and their new teacher has put up a new jump in the spot where she had her accident, which they are all happy to practice on!
