Background:

Postoperative cases are associated with high levels of anxiety. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and deep breathing exercises are nonpharmacological psychological interventions that are promising and warrant further investigation.

Aim:

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of Emotional Freedom Technique therapy and deep breathing exercises on reducing anxiety.

Methods:

The research design was a systematic literature review. The literature search was limited to studies published within the past 10 years (2014–2021) and was conducted using several indexed electronic databases, including Scopus, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, Sage, and EBSCO. The risk of bias assessment was performed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist. Keywords were derived from the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) Browser and included “Emotional Freedom Technique” AND “Deep Breathing Exercise” AND “Anxiety.”

Results:

The search identified a total of 875 articles, of which 14 journal manuscripts met the inclusion criteria. The total number of participants included in this review was 645.

Conclusion:

Emotional Freedom Technique and deep breathing exercises are effective interventions for reducing anxiety.
